The New York Jets can save $9 million through a loophole after not yet cutting Aaron Rodgers.

Aaron Rodgers is still a member of the New York Jets with the AFC North squad needing to wait until Wednesday to cut him owing to a salary cap loophole.

While already reaching a contract to sign his replacement in Justin Fields, the Jets said they would be moving on from Rodgers weeks ago but have not yet made any movement with him.

This is because New York will be able to save millions by waiting until Wednesday, March 12, the official start of free agency opening, where they will cut him with a post-June 1 designation.

NFL teams are permitted to cut two players annually and designate them as "post June-1," which basically lets them divide the salary cap hit. Unlike absorbing it all at once, it is known as dead cap hit once a player has left across several seasons.

In the case of Rodgers, assigning him this placement will actually see the Jets save $9 million to their salary limit; dismissing him without this would have seen them lose $25 million, a move they just could not afford.

Rodgers reportedly had talks with both the New York Giants and Pittsburgh Steelers, but this could be the reason he is still without a team at this point.

The potential Hall of Famer purchased a house in New Jersey and could have preferred to stay in New York, but is reportedly influenced by the appeal of playing under Mike Tomlin, who recently made a significant trading move for DK Metcalf from the Seattle Seahawks.

Rodgers is probably going to sign with a team fast by Wednesday, and although his options reduced to the two already listed, he might still accept a deal in principle on Tuesday evening.
