The Easy Way to Disinfect Your Kitchen Sink (No Bleach Required)

You just chopped all the ingredients for your crispy ginger-glazed tofu. The meal was delicious, however the dishes are less appealing. Isn't it the usual outcome after each meal? A filthy sink with leftover food and countless bacteria.

To illustrate, the Global Hygiene Council reports over 17,000 bacteria per square inch in kitchen sinks. Luckily, hydrogen peroxide is an undervalued secret weapon that can effectively disinfect your sink and lower that scary figure.

As crucial as cleaning your glass stoves or sanitizing your sticky wooden dressing drawers is cleaning your sink. After all, it holds your bowls and plates between meals.

People often use bleach as an all-purpose cleaner to disinfect their sink and other kitchen areas. Bleach is frequently reliable, although it has drawbacks.

A strong chemical might discolor or rust your sink's protective coating, especially stainless steel. Strong bleach can also irritate eyes and skin. Hydrogen peroxide does bleaching but is friendlier on users and the environment.

Those brown, web-like scars show the bee pollination was intense — and the more pollination, the sweeter the fruit.

Cleaning with Hydrogen Peroxide

Often used to treat wounds or bleach hair, hydrogen peroxide is clear and colorless. Since it's milder than other bleaches, it's safe for most household cleaning jobs, including kitchen sinks.

Go for a Dull, Not Shiny, Skin

Hydrogen peroxide "can be converted into highly reactive hydroxyl radicals (OH), which attack membrane lipids, DNA, and other essential cell components to inactivate bacteria," according to ScienceDirect. It can disinfect a filthy sink.

Replace the bottle cap with a spray-nozzle top to utilize hydrogen peroxide. Spray the entire kitchen sink and let it sit for 30 seconds.

Though optional, sprinkle baking soda over the same moist area to break down sticky grease and grime in your sink. Rinse your sink after gently scrubbing with a sponge or towel. This should be done weekly.
