Among the enormous chore assigned to billionaire Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is Social Security Administration overhaul.
Every month, almost 72 million Americans get Social Security; many of them are worried about what changes Musk could bring about for the government that would compromise their benefits.
Musk has earlier referred to Social Security as the "biggest Ponzi scheme" ever created. The Cato Institute claims that before Social Security was passed in 1935, over half of older persons lived at or below the poverty level.
"Everything they are doing is driving this agency to system collapse," O'Malley said of Social Security's new administration.
"It will cause disruptions in service, and that will finally trickle into more frequent system interruptions for the processing of claims, so causing system collapse and finally the interruption of benefits."
Last month, DOGE and Musk suggested cutting off the Social Security phone service; apparently, they changed their minds following public outcry.
During a March podcast interview, Commerce Security Howard Lutnick proposed that "fraudsters" would be the only ones who would phone the Social Security helpline following a check missing.
"My mother-in- law, who is 94, wouldn't call and complain," Lutnick added. "She would get it next month; she would believe something got screwed up. Usually screaming, yelling, and whining, a fraudster generates the most noise.
Both Trump and Musk have dissemin ably false material regarding claimed government fraud involving deceased individuals getting benefits long after their deaths.
According to reports, the already-made changes have caused long wait times for callers looking for administrative help; the Social Security website crashed and online accounts malfunctioned.
