Although the deadline to claim these money is fast approaching, taxpayers who have not yet filed their 2021 tax returns could still be qualified for federal stimulus grants received during the height of the COVID-19 epidemic.
For taxpayers who did not get their third-round Economic Impact Payments (EIPs), the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has set an April 15, 2025, deadline for filing their 2021 tax returns and claiming any missing money. Each qualified person has maximum possible payment value of $1,400.
The IRS said at the end of 2024 that those who had filed tax forms but either left the Recovery Rebate Credit (RRC) field blank or put $0 when they were actually qualified for payments—$2.4 billion in unclaimed stimulus payments will be awarded to them.
Based on taxpayer 2023 tax return data, the government said most payments were likely to come by late January 2025 either by direct deposit or mailed cheques.
Millions of Americans still haven't filed their 2021 tax forms, meanwhile, which leaves perhaps billions of unclaimed stimulus money. The IRS has pushed people constantly to verify their eligibility and submit before the deadline.
Based on current tax data, the IRS projects that, alone among Ohio taxpayers, around 40,000 might be qualified for a median return of $762.
"The window is closing for folks who might have a tax refund waiting for them," IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel said. "We urge folks to check their records and submit their 2021 tax return right away."
