Hubble captures new view of the Veil Nebula

March 4, 2025

The Veil Nebula is the remnant of a star that was roughly 20 times more massive than the Sun. This star exploded about 10,000 years ago.

Supernova Remnant

The nebula is situated around 2,400 light-years away from Earth, in the constellation Cygnus.

Location

The Veil Nebula is a well-known and frequently photographed object in space, with Hubble taking images in 1994, 1997, and 2015.

Frequent Subject

The image is a combination of observations taken in three different filters, highlighting emissions from hydrogen, sulfur, and oxygen atoms.

Hubble Filters

The images were captured by Hubble's Wide Field Camera 3, which provides high-resolution views of distant celestial objects.

The Veil Nebula is vast, with its full extent being as wide as six full moons placed side by side, though only a small portion is shown in the image.

Size

By comparing the 2015 image with those from 1994, researchers can track the motion of individual knots and filaments of gas, helping them understand how the nebula evolves over time.
