How to Store Kiwi So It Lasts 2 Weeks or Longer

To extend shelf life, buy kiwis that are slightly firm to the touch. They ripen off the vine, so firmer ones will last longer and give you control over ripening.

Choose Firm, Unripe Kiwis

Let unripe kiwis ripen at room temp away from sunlight. You can place them in a fruit bowl or a paper bag to speed it up — add an apple or banana to accelerate ripening.

Keep Unripe Kiwis at Room Temperature

Once ripe (they give slightly under pressure), refrigerate them. The cool temp slows down the ripening process, helping them stay fresh for up to 2 weeks.

Move Ripe Kiwis to the Fridge

Store ripe kiwis in your fridge’s crisper drawer for best humidity and airflow. This keeps them plump and juicy without shriveling or drying out.

Use a Crisper Drawer

Moisture can speed up spoilage. Store kiwis dry and unwashed until you're ready to eat them. Excess moisture can cause mold or mushy spots.

Keep Them Dry

Keep kiwis away from bananas, apples, and avocados — they release ethylene gas, which can cause kiwis to overripen too quickly in the fridge.

Store Separately From Ethylene-Producers

For sliced or peeled kiwi, store pieces in an airtight container in the fridge. Add a paper towel to absorb excess moisture and enjoy within 2–3 days.

Use Airtight Containers

Want to keep them beyond 2 weeks? Peel, slice, and freeze kiwis in a single layer, then store in a freezer bag. Great for smoothies and lasts up to 10–12 months.
