The Chinese Zodiac’s 12 animals were chosen through a race organized by the Jade Emperor, the ruler of heaven.
The Rat, being small, tricked the Ox into letting it ride on its back during the race.
Legend says that the Cat was originally meant to be part of the Zodiac but was tricked by the Rat.
Despite being one of the most powerful creatures in Chinese mythology, the Dragon finished fifth in the race.
The animals are assigned to years in a fixed cycle: Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat (or Sheep), Monkey, Rooster, Dog, and Pig.
Each animal represents specific traits. For example, the Tiger is seen as brave and competitive, the Rabbit as gentle and kind, and the Snake as wise and enigmatic.
The Chinese Zodiac plays a significant role in Chinese New Year celebrations, where each year is associated with one of the 12 animals.
