After unveiling a new AI picture generating tool, ChatGPT is seeing unprecedented expansion, claims OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
With its GPT-4o, which is now freely accessible for app users, the AI assistant has been adding 1 million new users an hour amid "biblical demand".
"The ChatGPT launch 26 months ago was one of the craziest viral moments I'd ever seen, and we added one million users in five days," Mr. Altman wrote on X on Monday. "We added one million users during last hour."
Designed to be "not only beautiful, but useful," OpenAI stated the most recent ChatGPT tool lets users create highly complex graphics, logos, schematics, and visuals expressing exact meaning.
"GPT‑4o image generation excels at precisely following prompts, accurately rendering text, and leveraging 4o's inherent knowledge base and chat context – including transforming uploaded images or using them as visual inspiration," an OpenAI blog post said.
"These capabilities help you communicate more effectively through visuals and advance image generating into a practical tool with precision and power, so enabling the creation exactly the image you visualize."
Since its introduction, one of the most often used applications of the technology has been the production of visuals in the manner of the Japanese animation firm Studio Ghibli.
Thousands of Studio Ghibli-style images were posted on social media by ChatGPT users, and Mr Altman said that the great demand driven OpenAI to impose restrictions on the quantity of images people could produce.
Seeing people appreciate photographs on ChatGPT is really enjoyable, he said. Nevertheless, our CPUs are melting. While we concentrate on increasing its efficiency, we are going to momentarily impose some rate constraints.
Following the closure of a $40 billion investment round, OpenAI declared intentions to push the boundaries of artificial intelligence research on Monday.

OpenAI noted in the statement that since its November 2022 launch, ChatGPT now has 500 million users.
