New Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham had nothing but admiration for Caitlin Clark as she addressed the media following her arrival at Gainbridge Fieldhouse on Tuesday.
Cunningham, who joined the Fever via a four-team trade from the Phoenix Mercury in January, credited Clark for elevating women’s basketball.
“She has changed our game in the best possible way and every way. I want her to go do her thing, and anything she needs from me, I’m gonna be here.”
Having briefly interacted with Clark at last summer’s WNBA All-Star Game, Cunningham also praised how the rookie has handled immense pressure and expectations.
“She’s had a lot of pressure on her shoulders. No one’s walked in her footsteps, so it’s really easy to judge. At the end of the day, we just all need to empower each other. She’s done a lot, and that rookie class has brought much-needed attention to our league.”
Cunningham is part of a revamped Fever squad aiming to build around Clark following their first-round playoff exit last season.
Other key additions include Kelsey Mitchell, DeWanna Bonner, Natasha Howard, Sydney Colson, and new head coach Stephanie White.
