Mushrooms soak up water fast. If you leave them in water, they'll get soggy and lose their flavor. A quick rinse or wipe is all they need.
1. Avoid Soaking Them
For dirty mushrooms, a damp paper towel or cloth works best. Gently wipe the surface to remove dirt without damaging the mushroom’s skin.
2. Use a Damp Cloth
A fast rinse under cold water is okay. Just don’t let them sit in water. Rinse quickly and dry them right away with a clean towel.
3. Quick Rinse Work
If the stems look dry or rough, trim off the ends. This helps keep the mushroom fresh and ready for cooking without the tough bits.
4. Trim the Stem
You don’t need to peel mushrooms. Most of the flavor and nutrients are in the skin. Just clean them well and they’re good to go.
5. Skip Peeling Them
If you have a soft brush, use it to gently sweep off any dirt. This is great for delicate mushrooms like morels or chanterelles.
6. Brush Off the Dirt
Don’t clean mushrooms too early. They spoil faster when wet. Clean them just before cooking to keep them firm and fresh.
7. Clean Before Cooking
