The Washington Football Team had strong ties to free-agent wide receiver Amari Cooper in 2020. Washington really wanted to entice Cooper away from the Dallas Cowboys to team with Terry McLaurin in Ron Rivera's first year of employment.
Cooper agreed to go back to Dallas on a five-year, $100 million agreement and would stay with the Cowboys until 2022, when he was moved to the Cleveland Browns.
The Browns swapped Cooper to the Buffalo Bills last October. Though Buffalo desperately needed wide receiver assistance, Cooper did not contribute much for the team.
Cooper is just 30 years old and once more a free agent now. Cooper should have plenty remaining because the 10-year veteran won not turn 31 until June.
Could he create a great budget signing for the Commanders to increase their depth of wide receivers? Cooper would slot alongside Terry McLaurin and Deebo Samuel to provide Washington a possibly strong veteran trio.
Count nothing about it. At the NFL combine, Matthew Berry of NBC Sports interviewed an offensive coach for one of Cooper's clubs, who informed Berry Cooper was "done."
Now much for that. Take Berry's old coach's remark as sour grapes not here. Examining Cooper's output following a strong 2023 Browns season reveals That says volumes if the Bills, who traded for Cooper and still need receivers for MVP Josh Allen, decided not to keep Cooper.
Washington might use more receiving depth, but he will probably choose a less expensive, faster solution than Cooper, who won't need many touches with McLaurin and Samuel ahead of them.
